1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy explains how BetHive.co.za (“BetHive”, “we”, “us” or “our”) uses cookies and similar technologies when you visit the website.

It explains what cookies are, why they may be used, the types of cookies used by BetHive and its service providers, and how you can accept, reject or withdraw consent for non-essential cookies.

This Cookie Policy should be read together with BetHive’s Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions.

BetHive is an independently owned South African betting-information, comparison and affiliate-marketing website. BetHive is not a casino, bookmaker or gambling operator and does not accept bets, deposits or withdrawals.

2. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your computer, mobile phone or other device when you visit a website. They allow a website to recognise a browser or device, remember preferences, operate securely and understand how the website is used.

• Prevent duplicate consent requests; and
• Support other functions specifically requested by a user.

Because these cookies are necessary to provide the website or a user-requested function, they are not controlled through the consent toggle for optional cookies. You may still block them through your browser, but parts of the website may then fail to work properly.

Strictly necessary cookies must not be used for optional analytics, targeted advertising or unrelated affiliate profiling.

6. Analytics cookies

Analytics cookies may help BetHive understand:

7. Advertising cookies

If advertising services are enabled, advertising cookies may be used to:

• Prevent the same advertisement from being shown excessively;
• Measure advertising-campaign performance;

• Display advertising based on general interests or previous browsing activity.

Advertising cookies are not essential. They must be blocked unless and until the user provides the required consent.

BetHive does not knowingly use advertising cookies to target minors.

8. Affiliate-tracking cookies

Some links on BetHive are affiliate links. When a user follows one of these links, BetHive or the relevant affiliate network or operator may use a cookie or similar identifier to record the referral.

Affiliate tracking may record:

• The affiliate link or offer clicked;
• The date and time of the click;
• The page from which the link was followed;
• An affiliate, campaign or click identifier;
• General browser or device information; and
• Whether a qualifying action was attributed to BetHive.

This allows the operator or affiliate network to calculate whether BetHive is entitled to a commission. Using an affiliate link does not increase the price charged to the user by BetHive.

BetHive does not require access to a user’s gambling password, banking credentials, full betting history, betting-account balance or payment-card information for affiliate tracking.

Third-party operators and affiliate networks control their own cookies and data practices after a user leaves BetHive. Users should read the relevant third party’s privacy and cookie information before creating an account or providing personal information.

Affiliate-tracking cookies are treated as non-essential and are blocked until the user consents.

9. Cookie consent banner

On a user’s first visit, BetHive’s cookie banner provides clear and genuine choices before any non-essential cookies are placed.

The banner must:

• Explain that BetHive uses cookies;
• Provide an “Accept all” option;
• Provide an equally clear “Reject non-essential” option;
• Provide a “Manage preferences” option;
• Keep analytics, advertising, affiliate-tracking and other optional cookies switched off by default;
• Avoid pre-ticked consent boxes for optional cookies;
• Avoid treating continued browsing, scrolling or silence as consent;
• Allow consent to be given separately by category;
• Record the user’s selection; and
• Link to this Cookie Policy and the Privacy Policy.

Rejecting non-essential cookies must not prevent access to BetHive’s ordinary informational content. Strictly necessary cookies may still operate.

10. Withdrawing or changing consent

You may withdraw or change your consent at any time by selecting the “Cookie Settings” or “Manage Cookie Preferences” link displayed in BetHive’s website footer.

Withdrawing consent will prevent future use of the relevant optional cookies. It may not automatically remove cookies already stored on your device. You can remove those cookies through your browser settings.

Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing that occurred before consent was withdrawn.

12. Third-party cookies

Third parties may set or access cookies when their services are enabled on BetHive or when a user follows an external link. These parties may include:

• Affiliate networks; and
• Lawfully authorised gambling operators.

Third parties act under their own privacy and cookie policies for processing they independently control. BetHive does not control cookies placed after a user leaves BetHive and visits an external website.

BetHive’s Cookie Settings panel lists the cookies and similar technologies detected on the website, including their provider, purpose, category and duration.

BetHive reviews and updates this information when it adds or removes a plugin, analytics service, advertising service, embedded feature, affiliate network or other technology that may use cookies.

BetHive classifies a cookie according to its actual function and does not describe a cookie as essential merely to avoid obtaining consent.

14. Retention

Cookies remain on a device for the duration shown in the Cookie Settings panel unless the user deletes them sooner.

BetHive will not retain personal information derived from cookies for longer than reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, unless a longer period is required or permitted by law. When information is no longer required, BetHive deletes, destroys or de-identifies it as soon as reasonably practicable.

15. International processing

Some third-party cookie, analytics, advertising or affiliate providers may process information outside South Africa.

16. Your privacy rights

Subject to POPIA and other applicable law, you may have the right to request access to or correction or deletion of personal information, object to certain processing, withdraw consent and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.

BetHive may update this Cookie Policy when its website, cookies, service providers or legal obligations change.

The updated Policy will be published on this page with a revised “Last updated” date. Where appropriate, BetHive may ask users to make a new cookie selection following a material change.
