Responsible gambling
Practical information about safer gambling, warning signs, operator controls and where South African readers can seek support.

1. Our role
BetHive is an independently owned South African betting-information, comparison and affiliate-marketing website. BetHive is not a casino, bookmaker or gambling operator and does not accept bets, deposits or withdrawals.
This page provides general awareness and signposting. It is not counselling, medical advice, treatment or a substitute for support from a qualified professional.
2. Adults only
Gambling is for adults aged 18 or older. Minors must not gamble, open a betting account or use BetHive’s betting-related affiliate links.
Parents and guardians should use appropriate device and account controls, keep passwords and payment methods secure, and speak openly with young people about gambling risk.
3. Gambling carries risk
Gambling outcomes are uncertain. You can lose money, and gambling is not a way to earn income or solve financial problems. No guide, review, comparison, rating or promotion can remove that risk or guarantee a return.
Only gamble with money you can afford to lose after essential expenses and savings. If losing the full amount would cause difficulty, do not gamble it.
4. Safer gambling steps
- Set a strict spending limit before you start and do not increase it after a loss;
- Set a time limit and take regular breaks;
- Never borrow money or use funds needed for food, housing, transport, education, debt or healthcare;
- Never chase losses or treat a previous loss as a reason to bet again;
- Avoid gambling when upset, stressed, lonely, under pressure, or affected by alcohol or other substances;
- Keep gambling separate from work and family responsibilities;
- Track the total time and money spent, not only individual wins;
- Do not rely on tips, systems or past outcomes as a guarantee; and
- Stop immediately if gambling is no longer enjoyable or feels difficult to control.
5. Warning signs
Gambling may be causing harm if you:
- Spend more time or money than planned;
- Chase losses or increase stakes to recover money;
- Borrow, sell belongings or miss essential payments to gamble;
- Hide gambling or lie about its extent;
- Feel anxious, irritable, guilty or unable to stop;
- Neglect work, studies, relationships or health;
- Use gambling to escape problems or difficult feelings; or
- Experience conflict, debt or distress connected with gambling.
You do not need to wait for every sign. If you are worried, stop gambling and seek support now.
6. Controls provided by operators
A gambling operator may offer deposit limits, spending limits, time reminders, cooling-off periods, account closure and self-exclusion. These controls are set and enforced on the operator’s platform, not by BetHive.
BetHive cannot open, restrict, freeze, close or self-exclude a third-party gambling account. Contact the operator directly and use the strongest controls appropriate to your situation.
7. Taking a break
If you are concerned about your gambling:
- Stop betting and leave gambling websites or applications;
- Use operator limits, cooling-off or self-exclusion tools;
- Remove saved payment methods where appropriate;
- Ask your bank about available gambling-payment controls;
- Use device-level blocking tools if helpful;
- Tell a trusted person and ask for practical support; and
- Contact a recognised responsible-gambling support service or qualified healthcare professional.
8. South African support
If gambling is causing harm, seek confidential help from the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation or another recognised support service. Verify current contact options through the organisation’s official website before sharing personal information.
If you or another person is in immediate danger or experiencing a crisis, contact the appropriate South African emergency service without delay.
9. Family and friends
Gambling harm can affect partners, children, relatives and friends. Offer support without taking over debts or giving money that may be used to gamble. Encourage the person to use operator controls and professional support, and seek support for yourself where needed.
10. Affiliate content and promotions
Some BetHive pages contain affiliate links or paid placements. These are clearly labelled. A commercial relationship must not determine an editorial rating or reduce the need for responsible-gambling information.
Promotions are not a reason to spend more than planned. Read all eligibility requirements and terms directly with the operator. Treat urgency, bonuses and advertised returns cautiously, and never assume an offer removes financial risk.
11. Third-party responsibility
Each gambling operator is responsible for its own accounts, identity checks, products, licence claims, player-protection tools and legal compliance. BetHive does not control these systems and does not guarantee an operator’s conduct.
Before using an operator, independently verify its legal status, current terms, privacy practices and responsible-gambling tools.
12. Privacy and cookies
Read BetHive’s Privacy Policy to understand how personal information is handled and the Cookie Policy to control optional analytics, advertising, affiliate tracking and functional technologies.
13. Changes to this page
BetHive may update this information when services, support resources or legal obligations change. The revised page will show an updated date.
